PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC

Updated: May 27, 2022

Came highly recommended, & this was one of the trips I was most excited about prior to abroad. It lived up to all of the hype - this trip was incredible.

Prague was easily one of the prettiest places I have ever been. I went with a group from my Barcelona program, and we all thought it felt like walking around Disney World the entire time.

There was really fun nightlife but also so much to see and do during the day - this meant that we didn't sleep a lot this trip, but it was so worth it. Like Budapest, it was one of the cheapest cities we traveled to.

I would recommend taking out cash right away when you get there - we took out about 1,000 Crown. There are lots of bars & restaurants that charge a cover or require you to buy drinks with cash.

STAY

Hostel Rosemary

  • This was such a great set-up; really cheap & in a great location

  • We got a private 6-bed room; 6 twin beds with a private bathroom & kitchen

  • 24hr front desk that let us leave our bags for free in their reception area before we were able to check-in and after check-out so we could have more time to walk around bag-free

Generally, I'd recommend staying somewhere in the Old Town part of the city (this is where most of the things to do/places to eat & shop are)

EATS

  • Bakeshop - We went here for breakfast twice since it was convenient & really good; came highly recommended from friends & lived up to expectations; yummy macarons, omelettes, and fire looking pastries; also award-winning carrot cake, but don't let them sell you a whole one :)

  • Cafe Louvre - French cafe vibes, and apparently this is where Albert Einstein was a regular for a while so that was cool; I had delicious veggie pancakes & tried mulled wine, the boys got full steak dinners for super cheap, and then we all tried a dessert - all were good! Bonus: Had GF options & a marked menu

  • Las Adelitas - Very Tex-Mex vibe & so good, it was exactly what we were in the mood for; really good tacos & margaritas

  • SmetanaQ Cafe & Bistro - We went here for brunch mostly because they had pink chai lattes, but it had really good food too

  • Klasterni pivovar Strahov - A beer garden in Prague; we got lucky coming here the weekend before Ash Wednesday as they were having a beer festival with different local food & beer tastings; right near the Castle District, so this is a good place to stop after walking around that area

  • Pizza Nuova - Had really good looking pizza & I had a really good salad here; great dinner stop

  • Good Food, Coffee & Bakery - The only place I’ve seen that had gluten-free chimney cake, & it was so so good; this place also has the option to fill your chimney cone with ice cream

NIGHTLIFE

  • U Sudu - Had a speakeasy vibe to it; very normal looking restaurant when you walk in, and then underground there are a bunch of little rooms connected by small tunnels & stairways; loved this place as a pregame spot

  • Lucerna - Came highly recommended by everyone that we talked to before coming, but I wouldn’t say it really lived up to the expectations - that might have just been because of the crowd the night we went though (really young, felt high school); 80s & 90s nights every Friday & Saturday - we went to one of these so the music was really fun & different than the clubbing we were used to; you have to buy tickets in advance, so I would recommend going early in the day to get them - we went after dinner and ended up waiting for a long time

  • Duplex - Came here really late, but I wish we had gone earlier since it was really fun; really fun vibe inside with cool little rooms and also a big clubbing area; it's a rooftop which was cool too; would highly recommend

  • Epic - By far the biggest club we went to in Prague; we came here after the bar crawl so we didn’t stay long, but I wish we could’ve; had a lot of fun while we were there

THINGS TO DO

  • Drunken Monkey Bar Crawl - Can’t recommend this more, it was the highlight of our trip! We did it with a ton of other study-abroad seeming kids; you get a lot of free drinks while seeing a lot of different places, so the ticket was really worth it

  • Castle District Walking Tour - The one we did was 12€ and we loved it; our guide was awesome and actually from the US; he led the tour in such a way that it ended at the Strahov Monastery Beer Garden which was definitely an added bonus; with this tour, you get to go into the cathedral, and our guide was a really good storyteller which made learning the history as we were walking really interesting

  • Lennon Wall - BRING PAINT OR A MARKER; we resorted to using a ballpoint pen on the wall which wasn’t very effective, I wish we had thought to bring something else; check out the boutique right behind it too - they had really cool postcards

  • Prague Metronome - Worth the hike up for the view of the city

  • Charles Bridge - Definitely go during the day as it's hard to see all of the statues & appreciate it at night

  • Rotating Head Sculpture (By Franz Kafka)

  • Old Town Square

  • Astronomical Clock

  • Piss Sculpture

  • Dancing House
